And what do others think when they look at the sea? What truths does it reveal to me? What do I confess to it? What do they give up when they contemplate it? What do you dream about when you see it? How many parts of me have I let go with the water? What does it make me want to commit to?
The sea has witnessed my dreams and my goodbyes. My fear and my faith. It has seen me hopeful, broken, grateful, alone, alive. It has been a temple, a refuge, a mirror, and a witness. I like to believe that when I speak to it, someone else is listening. And that leaving something there always has a purpose. This work bears witness to a profoundly transformative year, which I will reflect on from sea to sea.
This chapter of my life gave and took from me very punctually. It enlightened me and broke me. It left me empty, and also more alive than ever. It was the year in which I found the most meaning in life, and also the year in which I found the least and most challenged me to understand that sometimes there is no meaning, and that's okay. Sometimes, life is sustained precisely by its contradictions.
During this process, I experienced goodbyes, losses, and my first experience trying to understand death. But I also achieved the personal and professional fulfillment I'd been working toward for years, and I felt more fulfilled than ever before.
I started this piece as one version of myself. I ended it as another. Or maybe I recognized myself.
There are years that break us and make us at the same time. There are griefs that are overcome with joy. And what remains undone, what is left unsaid, what is left behind… also inhabits us. I am chaos and calm. Life is chaos and calm. The same as the sea. The sea intimidates you, but it also impresses.
